It’s amusing to me that the first piece of music I was involved in that was released into the world through official channels and what not, is a 16m and 22s long improvisation. It is a beast called You Were Warned.
In trying to promote this piece, it was immediately apparent how little long-form works get onto playlists or talked about in newsletters. There’s a handful of excellent newsletters and playlists out there that include long pieces, but they are mostly on the classical music and gentler ambient side of the fence.
You Were Warned, though the 1st Delays Have Dangerous Ends release, is solidly in the Delays tradition of heavy dark drone business. Yes it is ambient, but ‘heavy ambient’.
One of the things I like about this improvisation is the sparse notes I am playing interacting with the loop Matthew Syres has set up – and which occasionally throws out a beautifully major chord between us. It is like glimpses of sunlight through the dark billows.
